Christmas tree farms nationwide are again teamed up during the holiday season to donate Christmas trees to the families of troops serving oversea. Pinestead Christmas Tree Farms is one of a number of Minnesota tree farms involved in the program and has participated every year since the program began in 2005.
Pinestead Tree Farms is a member of the National Christmas Tree Association which sponsors the event through its charitable arm, the Christmas Spirit Foundation. The Christmas Spirit Foundation teams with FedEx to ship several large truckloads of trees, along each coast, and in the mid-central region. The Minnesota truck originates in Andover and makes additional pickups along the way before arriving at its selected base(s).
The Minnesota Christmas Tree Association coordinates the pickup here in Minnesota with over 100 trees coming from about a dozen different Minnesota farms. Pinestead's Phil Hartley said in a press release: “This is just one of a number of activities that the Christmas Spirit Foundation is sponsoring. The foundation was created to support activities that help promote families, kids, and the environment.”
